The Motown sound has come to define the American musical zeitgeist from the 1960s onwards. Borrowing its name from the host city of Detroit that was nicknamed Motor-Town or Motown due to the concentration auto manufacturing entities, the eponymous sound was courtesy the likes of the Miracles, The Marvelletes , The Supremes, The Temptations and the Four Tops. The latter two have distinctly featured an all-male lineup that has crooned and charmed its way through the annals of R&B, soul, doo-wop and pop for more than half-a century and are still going strong. Releasing their debut album Meet The Temptations the same year, the group went on to build an impressive repertoire of almost four dozen studio albums that entailed more than a dozen chart-topping records and spawned 18 number singles including a quartet of Billboard Hot 100 toppers. Their legacy has helped them clinched numerous awards including a trifecta of Grammys as well as a nomination for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance in 2007. Before they could commence their musical gyrations, the Four Tops started out having their sights set on their goals of stardom as the Four Aims and then adopted their popular moniker three years later. Initially toying with jazzy melodies, the Four Tops, namely Abdul “Duke” Fakir and Levi Stubbs along with Lawrence Payton and the dynamic Renaldo “Obie” Benson, started channeling the mainstream and saw their first hit in “Baby I Need Your Loving” that peaked at the 11th spot on Billboard Hot 100.
