Price Trends for the NBA’s Conference Quarter Finals

According to Forbes, the NBA witnessed an all time regular season record for attendance this year. The figure stands at 21,926,548, which eclipses the previous record of 21,841,480 set in 2006-07. It also surpasses last year’s total of 21,392,721 by more than 500,000.

This year, attendance has seen a 2.4 % increase over last season’s average attendance, which makes it the highest year-over-year percentage increase since the 1995-96 season. Basketball fans might remember that a certain Michael Jordan made his comeback that year.

Attendance numbers might have grown for a number of reasons this year. Better performances, return of star players or a good run of form could all account for better numbers. For example the Cavaliers saw an increase of almost 19% from last year, mainly due to LeBron’s return. On the other hand, the Hawks had an outstanding showing in the Eastern conference, but their attendance numbers were quite ordinary.

An increase in attendance means an increase in demand, and the secondary ticket market has reacted to this increase in demand for tickets. If we take a look at the conference quarterfinals, ticket prices have generally gone up. For example the average ticket price, if we take into account all games, is $395.24.

The lowest average price for a game is $88.13, for game two between the Grizzlies and Trail Blazers at the FedEx Forum in Memphis. But even for this game, the maximum price goes up to $1270. Interestingly, the highest average ticket price is $2100.28, which is for game three between the Grizzlies and Trail Blazers at the same venue.

The lowest walk in price for a game is for $12, for the first game between the Wizards and Raptors at the Verizon Center. The highest walk in price is $142 for game four (if it is required) between the Cavaliers and Celtics.
