Tony Awards – A Historic Night in Theater Scene

2015 Tony Awards showed a lot of maturity as it was a victory of art and sophistication over commercial and conventional in the theater scene. Fun Home, a heart-wrenching musical about sexuality, family emotions and suicide took home the “Best Musical” award, along with other honors like “Best Director” and “Best Original Score”. Propelled by rave reviews and an unexpected victory, the musical is now looking forward to a longer Broadway run. Following the big win, the production witnessed a major turning point in ticket sales. The glitter of the Tony Award has hiked the price of Fun Home tickets and it has now gone up to an average of $325. The musical will be running at the Circle in the Square Theatre in NY from June till September and on ExciteEvents the lowest priced tickets are averaged at $244.

The “Best Play” award went to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, along with four other big wins. Alex Sharp took home the trophy for “Best Actor”. Following the monumental and rewarding night at the Tonys, the average ticket price for the play has seen a jump. Running at the Barrymore Theatre, June 11 performance has the highest priced tickets, averaging at $307. The evocative play centers on a young boy suffering from autism spectrum disorder.

An American in Paris won four awards out of twelve nominations which included “Best Choreography” and “Best Orchestrations”. The musical entered the night as favorites but was unable to take home big honors, losing to Fun Home. Good news for the show is that it doesn’t need a Tony Award Best Musical Award to secure its financial success. It was already a box-office hit, consistently grossing over almost $1.2 million ticket sales every week. As the musical continues its run at the Palace Theatre New York City, its average ticket price has reached $431. It has once again made it to the top five grossing shows, joining the perennial musicals, The Lion King, Wicked, Aladdin and The Book of Mormon. 

Multiple wins for The King and I had a snowball effect on the ticket price. According to ExciteEvents, June 9 performance sold tickets averaging at $692 and other expensive shows have average ticket price of $680, $604 and $590.

David Hare’s Skylight bagged the award for “Best Revival” and is here to stay for more successful runs. Multiple performances will take place at the John Golden Theatre and ExciteEvents is offering tickets at an average price of $678. This is also the most expensive show on the docket and will take place on June 12. The average ticket price for 16 shows to be staged in June is $517.

While many shows will reap the benefits of winning Tony Awards and enjoy sales jump, there are others who have no choice but to close the productions. These include The Visit, Hand to God and Airline Highway.
