Sia Kate Isobelle Furler was born to loving parents, Phil Colson and Loene Furler. She was introduced to the creative elements early on as her father was a musician and her mother was an arts lecturer. Moreover she is the niece of Kevin Colson who is a well known actor and singer, and Colin Hay who was a member of the group, Men at Work.
Since she belonged to a family with a musical background, it made it easier for Sia to take up music as a career. She cites some of the most iconic names as her influences including, Stevie Wonder, Sting and Aretha Franklin. After her graduation from the Adelaide High School in 1994, she became a part of the acid jazz group, “Crisp,” as a vocalist. She contributed vocals for two of their albums, ‘Word and the Deal’ and ‘Delerium’ in 1996 and 1997 respectively before the group parted ways. After the separation, Sia decided to pursue a solo career and got signed to Flavoured Records. She then released her debut studio album, ‘OnlySee.’ The record failed to chart and sold only twelve hundred copies in Australia. When she failed to make her mark in the music industry, Sia took a flight to London where she was met with new opportunities that helped her in becoming the star she is today.
Finding her way to the top
Once in London, Sia joined the Grammy Award winning British acid jazz group, Jamiroquai as a background vocalist. She later collaborated with the English downtempo duo, Zero 7 which is the brainchild of Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker. Sia featured on a total of three studio albums with the group including, ‘Simple Things’, ‘When it Falls’ and ‘The Garden’ all of which not only went gold but also performed well on the charts in the United Kingdom. She contributed hit singles to the group’s records like, Destiny, Distractions, Speed Dial No. 2 and Somersault out of which the former reached the thirtieth spot on the UK Singles chart.
Sia soon started to gain recognition as a vocalist due to the work she did with Zero 7. That brought her one step closer to her dream of pursuing a solo career. She was soon approached by Sony Music’s sub label, Dance Pool and Sia signed a recording contract with the organization. She then released her debut single, Taken for Granted in 2000 that climbed to the tenth spot on the UK Singles chart. It wasn’t long before she finished working on her second studio album, ‘Healing is Difficult.’
The record was released in 2001 and charted at the ninety ninth spot in Australia. It featured two singles Little Man and Drink to Get Drunk (Different Gear vs. Sia) that reached the eighty fifth and the ninety first spots on the UK Singles chart respectively. The album did not receive much success due to the lack of promotion and so she decided to leave the label and later signed with Go! Beat Records.
Color the Small One
Once Sia signed with Go! Beat Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group (UMG), she came out with her extended play, ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ in 2004. The EP featured four songs including the title song, Don’t Bring Me Down, Broken Biscuit, Lucky and So Bored. She later came out with her third studio album in the same year, which was titled, ‘Color the Small One.’ It was produced by Jimmy Hogarth and employed a fusion of electronic and acoustic elements.
The album landed at the fourteenth spot on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and received favorable reviews from the critics as Pitchfork Media and The Guardian gave it three stars out of five. ‘Color the Small One’ produced five singles out of which, Breathe Me became popular. It climbed to the seventy first, nineteenth and eighty first positions in the United Kingdom, Denmark and France respectively. The song was also featured in the ABC Family television film, ‘cyberbu//y’ and was used as a closing song in the series finale of the HBO Drama, ‘Six Feet Under.’ Her other single, Where I Belong was to be included on the soundtrack for the film, ‘Spider-Man 2’ but was withdrawn due to a record label conflict.

Sia made her return in a big way by collaborating with Diplo and The Weeknd on a song, Elastic Heart which was featured on the soundtrack of the film, ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.’ Sia soon signed with RCA Records and released the first single, Chandelier from her sixth studio album, ‘1000 Forms of Fear’ in 2014. The song sold two million copies in the United States and was included in Complex’s list of ’The 50 Best Songs of 2014.’ The track charted at the eighth spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and received four Grammy Awards nominations. She also performed, Chandelier on a number of television shows including, Jimmy Kimmel Live! which created anticipation for her album.
