Rod Stewart was born on the 10th of January, in the year 1945 in England’s area of North London. This half English and half Scottish singer was born in a well to do family and had a fantastic childhood. An ordinary student, he played amateur football and was the captain of his school’s football team. From a young age, Rod Stewart picked up on his family’s love for music and began collecting and watching films of Al Jolson. He was so inspired by him that he even read books on him and was influenced by the legendary artist’s way of performing as well as his behavior towards his fans. Rod Stewart’s father bought him his very first guitar in 1959 and soon he was learning songs. Soon after he joined up with a small school band known as the “Kool Kats”, with a few of his friends.

Rod Stewart’s first goal was to become a professional footballer and spurred on by his father he went on to join the Brentford F.C. as an apprentice. But in a little while he was made aware of the fact that although he had the talent but he was not cut out to be a professional footballer. So he gave up on the game and decided to do the next best thing he knew, music. He worked odd jobs until in the year 1961, when he got an audition for singing and went to Denmark Street with The Raiders, but turned out to be an unsuccessful attempt.

Rod Stewart joined a group called ‘The Ray Davies Quartet’, later known as The Kinks, in 1962 as the group’s lead vocalist but was shortly dropped. He then joined with a band called the ‘Dimensions’ in 1963, in London. But soon the relations soured and Rod Stewart again took leave. In the same year he also adopted his trademark hairstyle and became interested in soul music and blues. In 1964 he was discovered by John Baldry who offered him a job to become a part of the act. That year he also released his first ever recording on “Up Above My Head”. He started working on his career as a solo artist and began recording a demo tape. He was soon signed up with the Decca Records in August and recorded his debut single in following month.

Rod Stewart’s first single, “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” released but failed to make an impact on the charts. Soon another group was made called Steampacket and he toured with this band and got the exposure to perform in front of huge crowds. He left the band in 1966 and in 1967 he joined up with the Jeff Beck Group as their lead singer and also wrote songs sometimes for them. Later on he joined a band called the Faces which was very well liked.

Rod Stewart finally left that band as well and in 1969 he was signed up for a contract as a solo artist by Lou Reizner of the Mercury Records. His debut album “An Old Raincoat Won’t Ever Let You Down” was released in 1969. It established him as a versatile singer who could sing rock, folk and country blues. Rod Stewart’s second album was titled “Gasoline Alley”. His next album, “Every Picture Tells a Story” in 1971 made him internationally popular, with hit songs like “Reason to Believe”, “Every Picture Tells a Story” and “Maggie May”. It reached the first spot in the UK and US both. In 1974, he released his next number 1 album called “Smiler”, with songs hit like “Farewell” and “Mine for Me”.
