Jhene Aiko – An Indelible Force In The Pop Landscape
Belonging to a middleclass family, Jhene Aiko claims to have seen life in its real form – hardships, struggles and a blighted lifestyle. Growing up in LA’s pop music scene, Aiko had a way with words as she enjoyed writing stuff and always thought that she would end up having a career in communications. Also a foodie, at one point she even considered becoming a food critique or editor. Having a musical background – two of her sisters were in a band, Aiko was also drawn to the art and at the age of 12 she signed with Epic Records. Contributing backing vocals on the songs for the R&B band B2K, Aiko rose to prominence and later also performed with them on their Scream Tour 3. She also featured on several music videos, including “Take It Slow” for O’Ryan.
At 15, Jhene was all set to release her mixtape with the label but due to creative differences requested to be released from her contract. She then decided to finish her high school, juggled two jobs and gave birth to her daughter Namiko at the age of 20. Jhene ended her hiatus with the mixtape “Sailing Soul(s)”, penned completely by her. It featured collaborations by stars like Drake, Kanye West and Gucci Mane. A polished effort, it offered the listeners a lot of flavors and was peppered with Aiko’s sensually charming voice. The mixtape included hit tracks like “Sailing NOT Selling”, “Hoe” and “Growing Apart Too”.
Her debut album “Souled Out” hit the shelves in 2014 and topped the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Albums. Boasting of jazzy, smooth compositions, the album spawned acclaimed numbers like “To Love & Die”, “The Pressure” and “Spotless Mind”. Baring her soul, Jhene Aiko compiled heartfelt and brave songs that touched the fans.
In 2016 she joined forces with Big Sean to release another EP “Twenty88” that reached number one position on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and peaked at 5th spot on the Billboard 200. Described as the “story of the highs and lows of a relationship, with insights into conflict, memories, love, sex, and more”, it’s a cohesive effort that touches all aspects of life. Sean and Aiko share amazing chemistry as they croon the phenomenal tracks “2 Minute Warning”, “Déjà Vu”, “On the Way” and “Selfish”.
Jhene is ready to set the stage on fire with her energetic performance as she will be rocking the Broccoli City Festival and will also be a supporting act on “The High Road Summer Tour”. Her diehard fans have already bought their Jhene Aiko tickets and are looking forward to have a blast with the diva.
